Jess Law - Office Administrator

Job Profile – Office Administrator

Name: Jess Law.

Job title: Office Administrator.

Employer: Choose Occupational Health.

Age: 22.

Where are you from? Carlisle.

Where do you live now? Carlisle.

Where do you work? Head Office in Carlisle.

How long have you done this job? Since July 2015 – just over 3.5 years!

Take us through a typical day: There’s no such thing as a typical day – which is one of the things I love about it. We’ve got a great team made up of all sorts of people and we get to deal with people from all walks of life with all sorts of different needs and requirements. As an administrator I do a lot of desk work. This can range from issuing reports and fitness certificates to arranging appointments or ordering supplies. I’m also on the front line in terms of answering phones and meeting and greeting clients so a cheerful and helpful demeanour comes in handy! Because a lot of our clinical staff are out and about delivering services, there’s a lot of juggling diaries and I sometimes get asked to go to external events and exhibitions to represent the company. It’s great to get out and about and meet other businesses, promoting our services and introducing the many benefits that occupational health can provide.

What do you like most about the job? The variety. No two days are the same and I’m always learning.

What do you like least? Being caught out by unexpected challenges! It’s a fast-paced environment and can sometimes be stressful. But I try to stay calm and take everything in my stride – treating it all as a learning experience so I can be more prepared next time!

Why did you want to do this job? I’ve always been interested in health and wellbeing but not on the clinical side. Choose Occupational Health has a great team of people and it’s a supportive environment. There are lots of training opportunities – I’ve already completed my NVQ business admin Level 2 and 3.

What jobs have you done previously? Mainly customer facing jobs in the retail and hospitality industry such as supermarket checkouts and bar work. It was great to get customer service experience, which has really helped me in my role at Choose OH, but the business administration side is where I really want to be.

What qualifications or experience do you need? To join as an apprentice, minimum apprenticeship requirements. To join as a qualified administrator, you need a Level 3 NVQ or equivalent. Good IT skills are essential and a willingness to learn is key! A good sense of humour always comes in handy too…

What is a typical salary for this job? It varies greatly but there are good benefits and lots of opportunity to progress.

Any advice for people wanting to get into your profession? Show enthusiasm, get as much experience as you can, be open to learning new skills and be adaptable.
