Functional capacity assessments (FCAs) are specialist evaluations that assess the functional abilities and limitations of an individual to inform the return-to-work process. These in-depth assessments are provided by an accredited physiotherapist, who uses a range of different assessment tools and physical activities to determine a worker’s current physical capabilities.
This helps ensure they can perform their job tasks safely, return to work or identify suitable redeployment options.
A functional capacity assessment aims to determine an individual’s physical abilities and limitations, assess which tasks can be performed safely, and identify whether rehabilitation is required to complete specific tasks. The process also provides a quantitative report on functional capability.
A qualified physiotherapist will carry out the assessment using their knowledge, expertise and experience to accurately evaluate the individual’s capacity to perform certain work-related activities.
Employees are asked to complete tasks objectively in a secure, confidential, and simulated space, guided and instructed by a qualified assessor from start to finish. Depending on the nature of the required tasks, appointments may last up to two hours and include a detailed report to managers to help them support employees who may have complex physical restrictions.
This information can guide any necessary workplace adjustments, future planning, employment, or redeployment where appropriate.
